Page 12 Nipigon-Red Rock Gazette Tuesday, February 26th, 2008 Happy Birthday Family and friends in the great Northwest Ontario extend happy 85th birthday wishes to Gertrude Cantley of Red Rock. There seems to be no end to her enviable creativity and passion for her handicrafts, garden, and horticulture in general. 85? She could pass for 60, such is her zest for life. Love from her husband Alec and from the “kids”, Bryan, Peter, Paul and Hedy and their families. Her friends are invited to celebrate her birthday at an open house at the Red Rock Inn on March 1, from 2-5 D.m. Change Clocks and Change Smoke Alarm Batteries to Increase Odds of Surviving a Fire Every Canadian gets the chance to improve their fire safety three weeks early this year, as clocks change at 2:00 a.m. on March 9, 2008. Daylight Savings Time now arrives the second Sunday in March, compared to prior years when people had to “spring forward” on the first Sunday in April. While the earlier time change is geared towards energy conservation, fire departments applaud the move because it launches the successful “change your clocks, change your smoke alarm batteries” campaign three weeks earlier across the country. By changing smoke alarm batteries at the same time you change your clocks, you can ensure this potentially lifesaving household device is fully armed and working to keep your family safe and from fire tragedy. It is recommended that you replace your smoke alarms every 10 years as the sensors used to detect smoke weaken over time and can become obscured by grime and dust in household air. More information on smoke alarm maintenance and replacement tips can be found on the SafeAtHome.ca website. My World.....And Welcome To It â€"Paulette Lalonde Forsyth I was just taking inventory of my book collection the other day, and a puff of thought, or perhaps that was dust, fluttered by. Anyway, if I read all these books like I think I have, I should be close to perfect by now! How could we possibly sink the ship with this vast sea of knowledge so readily available? There are books on everything you could possibly need to know or want to know about, at dummy level, so they proclaim. They have even cracked the code on baby talk! All those burps and gurgles really do mean something (and we thought it was gas!!). So here’s the icebergâ€"if we have that much knowledge at our finger tips, then why are there still so many problems? I pondered this, because I have way too much time on my hands. I took into consideration that for centuries, women married, cooked, cleaned, had babies, careers, la la la, on and on, and everybody survived. We simply took . the knowledge of those before us and tweaked it. Take cooking. Today, you could watch Rachael, or Paula or Bobby, all on the Food Network, and make hundreds of mealsâ€"and your kids will like three of them, mac and cheese, spaghetti, and pizza. From past experience, I’ve learned that choosing a handful of dishes and making them, from scratch (as my mother did)6, to perfection, beats a new menu every day of the month, hands down. Simplicity really is the answer. Too many selections just makes for frustration...and somebody is gonna pay!! I do not stand in front of a hot stove with the patio door wide open, in the middle of winter, slaving over a new dish, only to be told, “I’m not eating this!” Not at my house. Meals are enjoyed and savoured, at gun point, if need be. See you next week, Sunshine l Hurkett Carnival Fun The Hurkett Winter Carnival was a fun winter activity for all who participated, despite a few very cold days. Top photo is an Aquarium Cake, one of the many beautiful cakes decorated at the Cake Walk. Below is Steven Thompson of Dorion with his load of auction winnings.
