Tuesday, February 12th, 2008 Nipigon-Red Rock Gazette Page 7 0.N.E.C.A Poster Contest Winner announced Recently, Mrs. Cormier, teacher of the “Native as a SecondLanguage” (Ojibwe) at St. Edward Catholic School, asked her students to enter a Native Youth Essay Contest sponsored by The Ontario Education Counselling Association (ONECA) from Naughton, Ontario. Students in the Native as a SecondLanguage program, ages four through nine, drew posters on different things they can learn about their culture. Students, ages ten to twelve and thirteen to fifteen were asked to write a short essay on how to be a cultural role model for their peers. There were one hundred and ninety-eight entries in total from thirteen participating Dante Keating, Grade 5 student at St. Edward School, receives his award from Mrs. Cormier. Photo submitted Nipigon OPP Weekend Report During the weekend of February 1st to the 3rd, 2008, Nipigon/Schreiber Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.) received 27 calls for service and issued 26 Provincial Offence Notices. Police investigated four motor vehicle collisions. On February 2nd, 2008, O.P.P. officers were advised of a complaint involving a black snowmobile traveling at a high rate of speed on Bell Street in the Town of Nipigon. It was suspected that the snowmobile was stolen and the driver’s ability to operate the snowmobile was impaired by alcohol. The snowmobile was located by police on Bell Street and subsequently stopped on Fourth Street. Neither the driver or passenger were wearing helmets. One of the male subjects, schools. Twenty-eight entries were submitted from St. Edward Catholic School. Having the students participate in this activity was a wonderful opportunity for them to communicate in various contexts, to assist in developing a better understanding and appreciation of the Native language as an expression of a distinctive culture and to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of various aspects of the Native culture. All students who participated received a letter from the Board of Directors and staff of the Ontario Native Education Counselling Association, thanking them for taking time to submit their posters or essays along with a golden apple bookmark or pen, Dante Keating, a Grade 5 student at St. Edward Catholic School was the winner of the four to nine age category for his poster.
