Glena Clearwater Photos Glena Clearwater Staff Despite the drizzle and slippery conditions, the first lesson for this group of Little Bear cross country skiers went off without a hitch and instructor Seppo Osala felt he could spot a couple of new skiers with potential. Osala has top quality groomed cross-country ski trails at the rear of his property where skiers can go directly from the parking lot onto the trails. The trails are open seven days a week, from dawn til dusk and vary from easy trails for beginners to trails for the advanced. Osala would like to see more young people interested in skiing, a sport that offers an all round healthy workout compared to some other sports. Although Osala sees many more women skiing than men, he would like to encourage men to try the skiing as part of their fitness regime. This is Osala’s 11th year with his trails and comments from skiers say “they compare easily as good as or are better even than Kam View out of Thunder Bay.†Last week he began a course for youngsters, calling them Little Bears from the Finn word for his trails “Karhu†which means bear. The youngsters skied for over an hour, on a rather mild afternoon that helped them cope with a long time out on the trails. The lessons will continue all winter, “as long as the snow lasts.†So any youngsters are welcome to come out on Sundays from 12-2 p.m. The initial cost may be expensive for some, but once the skis are purchased, each year after they can be traded in at the ski Continued on Page 2 Osala has top quality groomed cross-country ski trails at the rear of his property where skiers can go directly from the parking lot onto the trails. Nipigon Council Notes: Council Committee Changes Glena Clearwater Staff_______________ At the recommendation of Councillor Dupuis, changes were made to the number of councillors that will be sitting on some of the Committees of Council. Due to the heavy work load some of the committees create as well as personal work loads, it was recommended that most of the committees have one member of Council and an alternate. On some committees this will mean there is vacancy for more citizen members - something that is not always easy to fill. Changes include -Library - Foulds, member; Mayor Harvey alternate; Museum - Dupuis, member; Foulds alternate; Cemetery - Pelletier, member; Harper alternate; Recreation - Dupuis, member; Harper alternate; EDC - Pelletier member; Mayor Harvey alternate; Planning - Foulds member; Dupuis alternate; other committees that councillors sit on that are not committees of council include - DSSAB -Foulds; Nipigon Housing Corp - Dupuis; Marina -Mayor Harvey, member; Fire Department - Harper, member; Lake Nipigon Watershed and NOSTA -Pelletier, member. The longest discussion was over the representatives on the Public Works Committee. In years past there were 2 councillors and a member of the public, but when the public stopped being interested, more councillors attended until now a Public Works meeting is all of council, plus the Works Superintendent and Foreman. It was agreed that 3 would be needed for a quorum - Mayor Harvey, Councillors Dupuis (alt Harper) and Pelletier (alt Foulds). Over the past few months the township has been working to improve the Nipigon website, with the addition of a monthly calendar available to all groups in the community. Unfortunately the calendar is not being used and has been blank - groups are urged to either call the town office or email the office at tnipigon@nwconx.net with dates of upcoming events. The Township received a Special Assistance Grant recently, to be used to offset some of the costs for Continued on Page 3
