The e-mail is an attempt to defraud you of your credit card and pin number. The message subject reads “your card has been flagged” and advises of unusual activity related to your service that indicates that other parties may have access and or control of your MasterCard. The message states that your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern of $250.00 and that the order was made from a foreign IP address. The e-mail states that MasterCard strongly advises you to “restore and re-activate your MasterCard” and instructs you to click on a website address in order to do so. MasterCard have confirmed to police that the e-mail is a complete fraud. If you are a baby boomer and have not considered ways to be tax-efficient - now is the time. You may think of RRSP’s as the only way to grow your earnings tax-free. However, there are other ways to save tax on your investments in a non-registered account. “As your lifestyle changes the closer you get to retirement, it is important to start thinking about tax-efficiency and being able to rebalance from equity to income,” said Dennis Tew, chief financial officer, Franklin Templeton Investments Corp. Accumulation phase before retirement A Corporate Class mutual fund helps you defer the tax you pay to the government, similar to an RRSP. Investing in Corporate Class funds gives you the opportunity to switch between different mutual funds without triggering a capital gain. “Corporate Class funds provide investment flexibility because you can diversify your portfolio and rebalance your asset mix according to your personal objectives rather than worry about tax issues,” said Mr. Tew. Drawdown phase after retirement As baby boomers get closer to retirement, they move from earning cash to depending on their investments for cash flow. Investing in a “Series T” mutual fund can make the cash flow from your investments more tax-efficient. It’s easy to remember this type of fund because “T” stands for tax. “This is best suited for people looking to receive cash on a regular basis from their investments in a tax-deferred way,” said Mr. Tew. Series T funds pay a fixed distribution each month, which is a “return of capital” and known as ROC. ROC is a return of a portion of your initial invested money. Some fund companies offer the benefit of “Series T” within a Corporate Class structure so that you can easily transition from growing your investments to receiving cash payments. Speak to your investment or tax advisor to find out more about tax-efficient investing. More information on Corporate Class and Series T funds can be found on websites like www.franklintempleton.ca.
