Thursday, January 19, 1961 NORSHORE SENTINEL 7 MEET YOUR CANDIDATES Oiva "Art” Hannula, 55, lives on Highway 17 and has been in the Nipigon district 14 years. He is a CPR telegraph operator who is married with one son, Allen. It is his first time running for public office, because he now feels he has the time to devote to it. Art as he is known by most people was induced by his friends to offer his services. ----------------- Gerry Routhier, 34, has resided in Nipigon since 1947 and is employed at the Red Rock mill. He was formerly a taxi driver in Nipigon and Manitouadge and owned his own business, Gerry’s Taxi. He is married with two children and resides on 1st St. He is running for office because he is not satisfied with the present council. ----------------- Gordon Waghorn, 60, has resided in Nipigon for 24 years. He is semi-retired having worked as a Government scaler and now works as a carpenter. Gordon was on the school board for six years having served as chairman for 3 years. He also served on the Board of Education in Sudbury. This is his first time running for council. He is the father of two boys, Lionel of Terrace Bay and Gerald of Marathon. He was approached by a group of citizens and asked to offer his services. ----------------- Art Ashworth, 32, came to Nipigon three years ago from Fort Frances. He is the manager of the Brewer’s Retail store. Art is married with two children and resides on Sanderson St. His desire to improve existing conditions in Nipigon and the lack of candidates prompted him to run for council. It is the first time he has offered himself for public office.___________________________ Murray Atkinson, 34, is married and the father of five children. He resides on 1st St. and is the Woods manager of Northern Plywoods Ltd. He came to Nipigon 6 months ago on a transfer from Prince Albert, Sask. He is a 1949 graduate of the University of Toronto as a forestry engineer. The lack of candidates and also his desire to see Nipigon continue as the type of town he would like his family to grow up in gave Murray the incentive to run for council. ----------------- E.C. Everett, 66 is one of Nipigon’s veteren citizens and resides on Front St. He was in the clothing and photo business for over 40 years and is now semi-retired in the housing and real estate business. He has never run for office before but now feels he has the time. ----------------- Lawrence Larson, 52 has been a resident of Nipigon for 25 years. He is married with three children and resides on Highway 17. He is a mill worker in Red Rock. He has always been interested in civic affairs and was induced by friends to run for council. ----------------- Roy "(Buzz” Taisey, 27, is married with three children and resides on 9th St. He is employed at Red Rock as a papermaker. He was nominated at the first meeting but declined and this is his first time running for a public office. He accepted the nomination because of the lack of candidates and a need for youth on council. Elgar bright, 40, resides on 6th St. He is married with four children and has been a garage owner since 1949, coming here in 1946 out of the Navy. He is the only candidate running for office with experience on council. He has served a two year term and is offering himself for service again because 'he feels that this will be an important year in Nipigon’s future. VOTE FOR YOUTH Let’s make a start on: Better recreational facilities. Correcting outdated bylaws. Winter works programs. Council needs young ideas, youthful vigor. Give Buzz Taisey a chance to show what he can do. A vote for youth is a vote for the future. FOR COUNCILLOR VOTE BUZZ TAISEY EXPERIENCE! No promises, no plan of attack can properly be made until a candidate is in office and has check-the condition of the town. If elected I promise to use my two years of experience on council, plus the experience of running my own business, to the best of my ability in handling town affairs. This is an important time in the development of Nipigon. It is a time when experience is important. I earnestly solicit your vote. ELECT ELGER WRIGHT FOR COUNCILLOR Progress. . but with Caution. Nipigon needs to expand but the present enthusiasm of the town should not allow us to forget our good sense. Nipigon must think hard and then act. I promise to do just that. I have no other promises to make, no other issues to bring up because the needs are clear. I ask your support at the polls to help bring some of these needs about.
