2 NORSHORE SENTINEL Thursday, January 19, 1961 CAMERON FALLS CALLING by Marion Lake A total of 13 people were on hand in the Community Hall Wednesday night at the annual general meeting of the Community Club to nominate and elect the executive for the coming year. Most of those present were on hand to accept the nominations put forth by the nominating committee which was set up at the last executive meeting in December. The general meeting besides bringing in a new slate of officers often involves discussion of problems pertinent to community activities but aside from a discussion concerning the skating rink, attendance prohibited even the selection of full committees let alone a full scale meeting of the community club as a working force. Nominated and elected to office were Allan Holiday as president, Jane Haig as secretary, and Lou Paju as treasurer. Heading the various committees are Mervin Enders - mens’ sports; Ty Pesola -dances; Lome Corlett - boys’ sports; Jane Haig - pool and playground; Don Belair - junior dances; Myrtle Pybus entertainment; Ralph Hansen representative of the Bowling League. The financial report read by treasurer Lou Paju showed a balance of $66.44 at year’s end. The question of when hockey sticks should be allowed on the rink aside from practise sessions was raised and after considerable discussion it was decided that from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30, p.m. would be the most suitable time. This is only a tentative arrangement subject to change. A notice will be posted in the store with further details. The colony was assured that all executive meetings are 'open’ to anyone interested or. anyone with a problem to be discussed. Time and date of future meetings will be posted in the store and in this column - we hope. Sewing classes for the women in Cameron, spurred by a very successful fall session, are convening again next week for another ten lessons. Classes are supervised by Helen Sums. Ten lessons are being offered in the course which begins this Tuesday from 7.30p.m. to 10.30p.m. There will be around a dozen 'pupils’ registered this time. Our electrical and mechanical maintenance crews met head on in an impromptu exciting broom ball game this week on Came Falls ice. The electricians came out on top 3-1. The game - Spur of the moment game that it was -met with such enthusiasm, participant and spectator, wise alike, that another session is being arranged next week when the champion electricians will meet the utility crew. We were not able to find out exactly when next week the game is being planned for - (this may be part of their secret of success.) Better go into intensive training utility. We hear the electrical gang is in the preferred list for 'power.’ CORRECTION: The combined Women’s Hospital Auxiliary tea and bake sale will be held at the Legion Hall and not the Elks’ Hall as previously announced. That’s the Legion Hall on Jan. 21. Norshore Sentinel Want Ads get results whether you want to sell, buy or trade. Phone 360 for an experienced want ad taker. Hospital Birthday Today Nipigon District Memorial Hospital, which celebrates its 12th anniversary today, stands as a symbol of the initiative of the citizens of Nipigon, Red Rock, Cameron Falls and district. The hospital was built at a cost of more than $400,000 in 1949 and the value has since increased greatly through new equipment purchased by the hospital board and the ladies auxiliaries of the three towns mentioned. Nipigon Memorial Hospital was a Red Cross hospital until January 1956 when a corporation was set up by interested citizens and a charter was obtained to make it a community hospital run by an elected board of directors. Since that time the hospital has been increased from 22 beds to 26 and many thousands of dollars of new equipment have been installed. It should first be explained that the Ontario Hospital Commission will pay for the construction of any approved hospital,as well as the general operational expenses of that hospital. Any additional equipment, even as far as the drapes on the windows, must be obtained through local funds or donations. Since 1956 the following donations have been received suction machine, Red Rock W.A.; electric suction machine, Nipigon W.A.; resusitat- for case room, Nipigon W. ,k. isolet and 10 bottle electric warmer for nursery, Dept, of Health; electric dishwasher, el ctric and gas stoves, Hospital Board; cardiograph, Nipigon W.A.; bed and stand unit, Cameron Falls Boy Scouts, record player for nurses residence, Cameron Falls W.A.; TV and furnishings for nurses residence, Hospital Board; up-to-date X-ray machine, Ladies of Nipigon-Cameron Falls auxiliaries. The ladies of Red Rock also have tentative plans to donate a combined operating room and plaster table. The hospital board of 18 members has Pete Lapenskie as chairman. Six members are elected from Nipigon, six from Red Rock, one from Cameron Falls and five are appointed. Election of a new board will take place in March and any citizen who has purchased a membership in the Nipigon Memorial Hospital Corporation or a membership in any of the women’s auxiliaries has a vote. The anniversary of the hospital is usually celebrated by an open house but this year will see a new inovation in the form of a Birthday Tea to be held Saturday from 2.30 to 5 p.m. at the Legion Hall, Nipigon. The hospital is presently under the direction of a board of directors and superintendent Mrs. Glady Gordon. There is a staff of four doctors, 25 regular employees and six relief help.
