6 NORSHORE SENTINEL â€"THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1960 PAINTINGS ON REFRIGERATOR! MRS. WAHL WITH SOME OF HER WORK Beardmore’s ‘Jane Of All Talents’ By ELEANOR NYLUND Marianne' Wahlâ€"Artist, Teacher of Ballet, Sculptor, in fact Jane of all trades when it comes to artistic matters. Anyone want their refrigerator painted? Not the ordinary utilitarian paint jobâ€"but real honest to goodness artistic treatment? When you visit the home of the Karl Wahls in Leitch, you will be startled on entering the kitchen to see that Marianne's refrigerator is uniqueâ€"no cold white functional piece this but a gaily decorated' conversation piece with an English Country Cottage scene painted on, the door. More paintings in oils and water adorn the walls of the rooms. Ashtrays of gaily decorated pottery are samples of Marianne's skill in modelling. Colorful materials reveal an equal skill at textile printing. Marianne hails from Wednesbury, near Birmingham in the English Midlands. She received her art training in a six year course at the Ryland Memorial School of Arts and Crafts, receiving an intermediate certificate in general art and a national diploma in design, calligraphy and textile printing qualifying her to teach art which she did for six years before coming to Canada. Marianne also studied ballet at night for five years at the Birmingham Athletic Institute. Her main interest was in Ballet, Drama, Choreography and Costume Design. She took part in Rhythmic Movement and Keep Fit demonstrations in London before the Royal Family. In 1955 she designed the props and 100 costumes for the ballet "Alexander's Feast," which was danced to the music of the Birmingham City Orchestra, one of the best concert orchestras of the Midlands. Marianne is a warm, friendly person with boundless energy and vitality. Talented as she is, she seldom volunteers information about her accomplishments. When something special needs to be done in the artistic line, such as decorations, eye-catching posters or illustrations, we learn in a casual way that Marianne can, do it or line up the work for others to follow. From Germany Karl Wahl is from Moers, located in the Ruhr Valley in Germany where he attended the Vocational Mining Training School. Karl and Marianne met when they were both students attending a Volunteer Agricultural Camp in England in 1951. In the following year Karl emigrated to Canada where he worked on farms, in pulp camps and finally came to Leitch Gold Mines in 1957. In 1957, Marianne came to Canada and the young couple were married in Geraldton. Since her arrival in Beardmore, Marianne has taught ballet to children, a Keep Fit course to the ladies of Leitch and Beardmore, has written, directed and acted in plays for groups at St. Paul's United Church. She and Karl are enthusiastic members of the Beardmore Square Dance club and are ardent amateur photographers. The Wahls, and their little two-year-old daughter, Heidi, are leaving on Oct. 14 for Great Britain and Germany, to show Heidi to her great-grandmother in England and Karl's family in Germany. Highlights of the trip will be visits to Glasgow, Edinburgh Castle, a walking tour in the Loch Lomond district, a reunion with old friends at Birmingham Athletic Institute, a ballet performance at Convent Garden and a tour of the Parliament Buildings in London. Marianne will visit her sister who is attending London University. Another sister, Joan, a recent visitor to Beardmore, is teaching science in a girls 'secondary school in Eastern Nigeria. In Germany, the Wahls will visit Karl's family in Moers, and if conditions allow, his sister who lives in Berlin. Karl will return on Nov. 14 but Marianne may spend Christmas in England.
