NORSHORE SENTINEL â€" THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1960 5 "On Spins and Needles" By JOHNNY MURPHY CJLX Program Director Carrier pigeon that transports this bit of prose to the North Shore each week came up with a broken wing last week, hence the two columns of emptiness where these words on wax are usually found. Hope you missed me â€"I missed you. By way of unfinished business, items from last week: Jimmie Rodgers' first movie role has been set. He'll play the lead in 20th's "Little Shepherd Of Kingdom Come." Two of the record world's biggest names now under new banners: A1 Hibbler from Decca to Top Rank, and Tony Martin after thirteen years with RCA Victor moves now to Randy Wood's Dot Label. Both these moves mean money in the bank for the boys at Quality Records, Canadian distributors for both the aforementioned labels. New Ted Daigle record due very shortly. I had occasion to sit in on the all-night recording session that produced one of the sidesâ€"A GASSER. Ted's first complete album set for release early in 1961. It'll consist of several of his former single hits, including "Mary Lou" and some new material that is just wonderful. That's last week's piece in a nutshell. Just in case you think the Christmas season is a long way off, may I call to your attention that the first Christmas single record was released this week. It's that old Xmas chestnut (no pun intended) "JINGLE BELLS." But "Jingle Bells" was never like this. The artist is Ella Fitzgerald. The performance is unmistakably Ellaâ€"Man! like it swings. Conway Twitty enters "revivalville" for his latest MGM release. It's the old Elvis effort, "WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN" GOIN' ON." Pat Boone's new DOT outing is up to past Boone performances; 250,000 copies shipped on the first pressing and then there are many orders left to be filled. Sides are "DEAR JOHN" and "ALABAMA The latter already very active in 'LXland, thanks to recordings of it by Bobby Kent on Mercury and Cowboy Copas on Sparton. The song with the most cover versions this week is "RUBY DUBY DU." It's from the sound track of the MGM motion picture, "KEY WITNESS". This was one surprised platter spinner when a rush copy of The Ventures' new album arrived from Liberty Records in Hollywood last week. By the way the kids played to a full house at The Fort William Gardens last Saturday night along with Bobby Curtola and Gerry Godick. Getting back to that new album, the first LP for The Ventures. It bears the same title as their recent smash single "WALK DON'T RUN." The surprise came from the very mellow sound the group produces on such non R, & R items as "MORGEN" and "MY OWN TRUE LOVE." Bobby Curtola at his best as usual before the big Gardens crowd. I have had very good reports from Ted Daigle about Bobby's next record releases. Ted heard the tapes and flipped completely. They were recorded in a professional recording studio in Toronto with a full orchestra headed up by Jimmy Coxwain, the piano player on the Jack Kane Show. Here's hoping they really do go over in a big way. It couldn't happen to a nicer young guy than Bobby Curtola. Among the celebrities at the World Premiere of "Camelot," the sensational new Lerner-Lowe musical, at Toronto's O'Keefe Centre the other night was home town boy, Percy Faith. Percy is set to record an album of music from the new show for Columbia. Jane Morgan, just finished two smash weeks at A1 Seagal-s Barkley Hotel in. Toronto, set for two' weeks at the Raddison Hotel in Minneapolis starting the 24th of this month.
