Dobie told Port Arthur Art and Literary Club about journey across Atlantic ; (portion of presentation reprinted) ; vessel in Liverpool ; fare was three pounds ($15) for adult to cross ocean ; was 10 years old when journey made ; provided water, fire and a bunk ; brought supply of hardtack biscuits ; soaked overnight, fry in pork gravy ; purchased tin cooking utensils, hay for bedding ; reson for excessive emigration was Irish famine ; suffered seasickness ; fresh water became putrid ; three deaths on board ; body committed to the deep
