- Julian Gifford (Jule) Cross ; native son, legendary figure ; born Silver Islet 1888 ; attended Port Arthur Central School, Port Arthur Collegiate Institute ; graduate of Queen's University, 1913 ; degree in mining engineering ; financed university with silver found around old mine site ; served as professor of mineralogy at Queen's 1916-17 ; active prospecting for four decades ; acquired 20 claims of nickel bearing property ; sold to INCO for $250,000 ; money enabled Cross to prove up rich iron ore under Steep Rock Lake ; married to Ida Machin in 1937 ; photo
