transforming Lakehead from small fur-trading and mining center ; to twin metropolis ; largely result of transportation ; railway-building history and James Conmee ; built several sections of CPR and Algoma Central ; Port Arthur, Duluth and Western ; connecting to Winnipeg and Canadian Northern ; with McLennan subcontracted section of CPR 1885 ; Ontario and Red River portions in 1886-1888 ; born Sydenham, County of Grey 1849 ; enlisted in American civil war ; purchased saw mill from Thomas Marks 1885 ; active in public service ; on Port Arthur council 1877, mayor 1885 ; provincial and federal member to 1911 ; died 1913
