12 NORSHORE SENTINEL Tuesday, December 20, 1 960. "On Spins and Needles" By JOHNNY MURPHY CJLX Program Director They’re calling this year, 1960, almost over now, "The Year Of The Movie Theme". With all the records featuring themes from motion pictures released this year, they’re not far from wrong either. Basically, this has been good for the recorded music business. As a rule, music from the movies has a lot more ear appeal than some of the original tunes we have been blessed (cursed - depending on your point of view) with in the past, year. Conversely, it was the year (another one of the many) in which Rock ’n Roll didn’t - repeat did not - die. Every year in the last five or six, at its beginning, was supposed to be the year that Rock ’n Roll met its final, once and for all, end. Comment: just don’t hold your breath until it does happen. Happy to report that Quality Records are about to sign the MIDNITERS to an exclusive recording contract, Their audition tape really created a stir around the Quality-Plant on Brichmount Road in Toronto. Their first single should be in the record stores by the first of the new year. It couldn’t happen to a harder working bunch of fellows. Another young Canadian who has finally got the long awaited record break is Doug Lycett. Doug lives in a small Central Ontario town called Orono. (When I was working at a radio station in Oshawa, Doug and three of nis friends formed a vocal group called the Four Bows. They used to sing at my record hops around that part of the country, and became quite popular. They were given some valuable training by Gino Silvi at the CBC in Toronto, but finally decided to break up and go their seperate ways. Finally, after some three years, Doug turned up with a record. He had help making the arrangements for his recording session from Ronnie Hawkins, himself -a recording star, and wound up cutting two sides for the Orbit label in the RCA Studios in Nashville. He had the best backing in the world of wax on his two songs, incidently he wrote both the tunes himself, The Anita Kerr Singers and Floyd ("Last Date") Cramer’s Orchestra. Best of the two tunes is "CINDY MERINDY". You can get a copy at your favourite record bar on Quality. Best new records of the week: two vocal versions of Floyd Cramer's instrumental smash, "Last Date . Skeeter Davis or RCA and newcomer, Dick Lory on Liberty, both have very listenable performances on the tune. I’d give the nod to young Lory. Fabian with two new rockers and squawkers’ "HOLD ON" and "YOU KNOW YOU BELONG TO SOMEBODY ELSE". The Van Dorn Sisters, seen frequently of late on CBC-TV, signed to a Philtone Records contract in New York this week. One of my best pals in the music business, Liam Mullan, ex of the Compo Company (Coral - Apex -Decca) in Montreal, takes up residence in Los Angeles this week to become Promotion Manager for Jimmie Rodgers, and Jimmie’s incorporated Company, Honeycomb Productions. He’ll be in charge of world wide promotion for the Roulette recording star and his many and varied activities.
