10 NORSHORE SENTINEL Tuesday, December 20, 1 960 BEARDMORE BRIEFS With the colored lights up on Main Street and T.V. aerials popping up all over town, Beardmore is taking on the appearance of a busy metropolis. There is no increase as yet in unemployment and none is expected, so no doubt we have the edge on the bigger centres there. One department that is kept busy is the snow removal department. Main Street and the side streets are clear at the present moment but not for long, we fear. Old timers say the snow storms stop once Lake Nipigon freezes over but since we have to dig our drive way out all winter long, I’m afraid someone forgot to tell the snow-maker when the lake freezes over. Mr. and Mrs. W. Poutanen and family and Mrs. N. Campbell spent the week-end in the Lake head. R. Puittinen left Dec. 14 by air for his commercial fishing camp on Lake Abamasagi, 136 miles north of Nakina. Among the supplies flown in with him was a skidoo, a new type of motor snow tobbogan which he will use on the lake. Ron will do commercial fishing during the winter and operate a tourist camp and act as guide during the tourist season. The Office Employees International Union, Local 321, Beardmore, held their Xmas Tree in the Legion Hall on Sunday, Dec. 11. The party was organized by Alfred Dam-pier, president, assisted by J. Kenna and J. Findley. Treats, refreshments and gifts were provided for the children of members which included the office employees of the Beardmore and Nipigon offices of St. Lawrence Corp. camp clerks and scalers. Any children unable to be present will have their gifts sent to them. Mrs. A. Nylund, mother of R. Nylund is a patient in Port Arthur General Hospital. Lome Cottenden, District Fire Marshal, Fort William met with the Beardmore Volunteer Fire Brigade Thursday evening at the Public School. Two films were shown, one on fire-fighting methods and one showing the extent of damage to be expected after an atomic bomb explosion. The local brigade under fire-chief E. Enders was drilled in the use of extinguishers. Others present were J. Whittrow, assist ant fire chief; J. O’Brien, H. Sommers, R. Nylund. Joy Campbell celebrated her sixth birthday on Monday Dec. 12 with a party. Rudy Zaugg, strip foreman and Alfred Gut, both of St. Lawrence Corp., Camp 88 left Beardmore Wednesday Dec. 14 by car for New York !where they will sail, complete with Alfred’s little D.K.W. car for Spain. They will spend Xmas at sea. They intend to tour Portugal land France and eventually reach their homeland, Switzerland, to visit their parents and relatives. They hope to do some travelling in Germany. Rudy, who has been in Canada for nine years intends to return at the end of three months by air. Alfred will return later with his car. Frank Zavaglia, of Port Arthur, is a guest for the Christmas holiday season at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Harnden. The skips of the Beardmore Curling Club met at the home of Mrs. Wm. Sinclair to draw up the rinks for the 1961 season. The following rinks were drawn: Mrs. C. Kozak, skip; R. Lappalainen, third; M. Johnston, second; D. Michaud, lead. Edna Fulford, skip; S.
