Tuesday, December 20, 1960 NORSHORE SENTINEL 9 Flyers- Merits in Split With 'surprise’ goaltenders guarding both nets, Marathon Mercuries and Nipigon Flyers split a weekend double-header at Marathon Saturday night and Sunday in North Shore Hockey league action. George Ruth was back in the Flyer nets and young Billy Deluca had the Merk pads on as Marathon won 7-3 Saturday and then lost 5-3 Sunday afternoon. Both Ruth and Deluca had decided on retirement. Ruth was called back when the club released young rookie Gerry Campbell of London, Ont. while it is not known what prompted Deluca to return. Flyers played with just 11 men Saturday night but still led 3â€"0 in the first period. The Merks then scored seven j straight goals. Bolstered by Vic Dahl, Paul Baxter and Clyde ManiHa Sunday, die Flyers had the legs and were not to be denied. The trio couldn’t make the game Saturday because of work. Also missing for both games was Dean Jones and George Swan. They’ll both be back Thursday when the Flyers host Red Rock in the first game of the season at Nipigon. Mercuries, meanwhile, were without high-scoring Johnny Charyna for both games. John had the flu. Danny Moon was the hero of the piece for the Merks with five goals, four in the first game. Bunny LeBlanc, Ron Kapitan and Al Lanteigne had the other goals Saturday while Ferguson, with a hotly disputed goal, and LeBlanc scored Sunday. Newcomer Ray Maki and oldtimer Herman Manilla lifted the Flyers, Herman with his fine play and Maki with two all-important goals Sunday, the winner and the clincher, A smooth, slick puck carrier, Maki appears to be a real find for the Flyers. Manilla meanwhile appears to have shaken off his" bad season last year and looks headed for another great effort. Alex Legacy, Herman and Johnny Zechner with his first goal in league play, scored for Flyers Saturday. Legacy again, Donnie Oja and Vic Dahl had the other goals Sunday. FROM THE BLUELINE: Former defenceman Jack Staples acted as coach of the Flyers in the absence of Marshall Borsk and reportedly did a fine job. Jack however, got the heave-ho, from referee Tremblay after a scuffle with Ron Kapitan. Kap had a mixup with Legacy in the corner. entered the penalty box with two minor penalties and then came back out after Staples made a comment or two about trying someone your own size.’ Staples took the first punch so he got a game misconduct. Kapitan got off lightly..a misconduct. The games were far from exciting as both teams need more conditioning. Flyers were boiling after Tremblay allow ed a goal they felt was scored after his whistle Sunday. That made the score 3â€"3-Crowds were small in Marathon and is it because the Merks aren’t billed as the giants they have been in the past? Rumor had it that Marshall Borsk would be moving from Nipigon soon but it’s not true. Flyers determined to catch the Royals Thursday night after a handful of pre-season losses before they were in shape but more determined than ever. Beadman picked up eight stitches Saturday while Johnny Zechner didn’t play Sunday after getting his lumps. Flyers will be without Jerry Carlyle Thursday. He’s going home for Christmas. Royals Stop Sups Skien Terrace Bay Superiors finally may be heading for the North Shore Hockey league championship this year as predicted by everyone. But before they take aim at the big bauble they might be better to try and conquer their other 'Jinx’..Red Rock arena. The Bays ran smack into the Royals Sunday at Red Rock and came out with their first defeat of the season a 7â€"4 loss after two lop-sided wins. Goaltender Arnold Jorgenson was just too much for the Sups but he had plenty of help up front. Brian Morgan paced the Royals with two goals while Whitey Smith, Larry LeSarge, Gordie Danville, Paul Fournier and Neil Seagris added the others. Dave Whalen scored twice for Marathon while Bill Pytyck and Marvin Osmar had single goals. It was 1â€"1 after the first period. Royals went ahead 4â€"3 after the second period; aft:er leading 4â€"1 on three fast goals in the opening minutes of the period. Dunville and then Seagris made it 6â€"3 in the last half of the final period and it was Red Rock’s win. Whalen scored with one minute left to pull the Sups closer but, just before the bell rang, Foamier pushed the puck past Dobson to make it 7â€"4. Terrace protested that the goal was too late but referee AI Langevin let it stand. ICE LANES: Gary LeSarge has joined the Royals giving the team four brother acts. He combined with brother Larry and Whitey Smith to give the Royals their best line yesterday. Other brother acts are Stan and Jim Pineau, George and Neil Seagris and Gord and Harvey Dunville.... Royals are now in a three way tie for first place and seem determined to make the predictors eat their words. They were picked for the basement. The Royals just outskatedthe Bays and that’s no mean feat! Dobson looked weak on a couple of goals but at the other end, Jorgenson was in top form. Thursday night Flyers host the Royal and it should be the biggest crowd of the year. With Ruth back in goal and a full squad the Flyers should give the Royals a good ran.
