NORSHORE SENTINEL â€" THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8, I960- 13 SPORTS BIZ WITH DIZ By PAUL "DIZZY" BAXTER With the season set to open this coming week-end, I would like to, in one fell swoop, go out on a limb and tell you who will be the award winners and league champions this year. While this just may be setting a precedent in North Shore League history, its just another of the services that you can expect from the Sentinel. Let's start with league champions. Terrace Bay will win the league by at least five points. The Superiors will break fast, taper off a bit near the end of January, but finish strong enough to be convincing winners. Either Dave Whalen, or Marv Osmar will win the scoring race and, like last year, the Cowboy, Marvin will win the most valuable player award. The best defenseman trophy will also go to Baysâ€" to Tom Pollard. Perenially one of the best two-way defencemen in the league, Pollard should blossom out into a real anchor on the Sups' blueline this year. Johnny Charyna, the smooth skating winger of the Marathon Mercuries will win the Most Gentlemanly Player Award in the 60-61 season. While still in Marathon, Big Ron Kapitan will have the distinction of receiving the most penalties, nosing out Ches Gallant of Red Rock. The top goalie, whether he wins the award for goal average against or not, is Arnold Jorgenson. The big question mark here will be whether the Royals defense remains as steady in league play as it has in exhibition. The Royals will have the least penalties chalked up against them, therefore -receiving the Peter Mazza Trophy. Roger Harvey believes in sticking strictly to hockey, and his influence will be noticeable in the team's play. This does not mean the Royals will be shying away from any tusslesâ€"they will just not be out looking for trouble. The Rookie Award will go to Bobby Adamo, the former North Star winger who will be making his debut at home in Terrace. The hardest hitting defenseman in the coming season will be Nipigon's George Swan. I'm pretty safe on this angle and will be backed up by every forward in the league. Top forward in league play obviously will be Marv Osmar. Coach of the year will be Ossies' right winger, Dave Whalen. Most colourful team will naturally be the Nipigon Flyers. They definitely have the most characters on one team. Though I'm repeating myself continually, I have to go with the Osmar-Whalen combination as the most potent line, and they gave a good indication in the all-star game of what to expect. The league will be as close as last year's race, with Marathon Mercuries and Nipigon Flyers waging a stiff battle for second place. Marathon will eventually nose out Nipigon and finish second behind Terrace. With Nipigon a solid third, Red Rock will finish fourth, about five points off the pace. In the play-offs Nipigon and Terrace will play in series number one and Red Rock and Marathon in the number two series. Marathon and Nipigon will emerge into the finals, with the Mercuries winning it in seven games. Marathon will pick up the Whalens-Osmar line and George Swan to play against Dry den for the Northern Ontario Intermediate championship. The Mercs will then travel further West.
