Thursday, April 27, 1961 NORSHORE SENTINEL Words In the Wind by CHUCK McOUAT A LETTER FROM A mother of teenagers: “I would like to answer he or she who made the phone call referred to in last week's column. I wonder if they have any family (from the way they spoke I would gather they didn't). I also wonder if they have ever thought of just what Nipigon has to offer teenagers in the way of recreation. "I grant the party that on school nights a parked car or cafe is no place for a teenager to ‘hang around'. But on weekends, naturally a teenager, like most adults, does like the privilege of going out. So come the weekend and do our teenagers have a recreation centre in which to gather or some other type of entertainment? They have little choice but to, as the phone caller put it, 'hang around' a cafe or travel by car to another community where they have something. "Being the mother of teenagers my opinion is that if a girl is going to get in trouble or take up drinking, she won't have to hang around any restaurant to start. She can be that kind of girl in any town or city. "If the caller is so concerned about what our teenagers are doing, why doesn't he try to do something for them?" The Mother of Teenagers. AND A LAKEHEAD READER adds his words of advice: "Teenagers, teenagers, teenagers! Is that all we can hear about today? Then clubs here, teen conferences there... everything seems aimed at the teenagers. Gosh, you'd think the word had just been discovered the way the papers are so full of it today. I'm in my early 30s and sure can't remember having such a big fuss made about us when we were in the teenage group. But we were just as responsible, just as serious-minded as the youngsters of today. Why, in Toronto, we used to have our own teen clubs which operated mass dances every Friday. We didn't need a recreational director to lead us. We did it ourselves... the works. So did lots of other groups in other cities. Teenagers haven't changed this much through the years but if you ask me, and nobody did, they'll change this generation, for the worse, if we keep spoiling them like we are. Don't publicize them so much and they'll make better citizens. We didn't get the publicity and . the pampering and we didn't turn out too badly. D.S., Port Arthur DID YOU KNOW: The first boxers fought sitting down. A strabismic person is cross-eyed- The average service station operator works 72 hours a week and he is no doubt, a little strabismic after a long day's grind! TALK ABOUT PLEASANT surprises! Take the case of the young family man who received a letter in the mail saying he had on deposit in savings account number 110, the amount of $2176 on which there had been no transaction for the past five years. The bank wondered if he was still interested in the money. Young family man couldn't think of how he came into the legacy until he checked the letter, signed by the bank manager, again. The clerk had put the figures in the wrong spaces! It was $1.10 in account number 2176! Who was young family man? Yours truly, that's who. It was such a 'dirty trick' that we immediately sent a letter back thanking them and asking them to make the proper changes in my bankbook and return money immediately. Didn't get it though! It was probably the big 'ha-ha' at the bottom of the letter that ruined it. HAVE YOU SEEN the gift for the man who has everything? It's a little box with a trap door and a little on-off switch. You start the switch and there is loud cranking and ’grinding. Suddenly the trap door opens* a small hand appears, shuts off . the switch, then disappears again. That's all! They actually sell them. BUSINESSMAN’S BEEF: "You lose more friends by loaning than you do by borrowing. Loan money and the so-called friends shun you because he can't pay it back. Best idea? Don't loan or borrow. But if. you do borrow, don't hide every time you see the fellow who helped you out. Be frank and stay friends." OVERHEARD: 'it's no wonder her hair's, going white with a man like that around..." DON’T FORGET: Mother's Day is coming; so is income tax deadline; Guides Cookie Day in Nipigon Saturday; Cancer Drive still needs help; Speckled trout season opens April 29; And, by official proclamation of 'Words', this is 'Be Kind to Mothers-in-law week. Everyone send their mother-in-law a rose, Did you hear of the new Russian space ship with the cows in it? ... "The herd that was shot around the world." TELEPHONES BRING SMILES TO D0RI0N-HURKETT FOLK LYLA AYLWARD MARY TYLER MARIE SWANSON MARGARET HARRIS JOHN BOYKO LOUIS NUTTALL NO MORE LONG TRIPS BY FOOT OR CAR DORION-HURKETT RESIDENTS GET PHONES Dorion-Hurkett residents will be able to make use of Alexander Graham Bell's most noted invention, the telephone starting on or about May 10 when the first telephone system goes into operation in the communities. Sentinel correspondent Anna Larocque asked residents cf the two communities just what they think of the new dial service. Here are some of the answers. MARGARET HARRIS - Dorion -Wonderful idea! In a scattered community such as ours it is a thing we should have had a long time ago. Without a telephone the people in the back roads are stuck. MARIE SWANSON - Dorion - Will be a saving on the gas bill. Now you drive to see someone and when you get there no one is at home. Now you will be able to phone before you go. MARY TYLER - Dorion - Wonderful thing! As a cripple the phone will mean a lot to me. In the case of sickness or fire I will be able to get help. LYLA AYLWARD - Hurkett - Will be a great help to the fellows who work in Red Rock. Often they have to work overtime and have no way to tell their wives. I've waited a good many years for this. FRANK THOMPSON - Hurkett -Should be a time limit on these party lines. A phone is a handy thing to have if people use it right. JOHN BOYKO - Hurkett - Best thing for our community. Be a good thing when no one has to phone long distance. Now you have to make a trip to a pay station and carry a pocketful of change. LOUIS NUTTALL - Hurkett -Will make things a lot easier. In the fish business we use a phone a lot. Recent Arrivals April 19 Mrs. F. Fowler, Red Rock, a girl, 9 lbs 8 oz. April 19-Mrs. B. Wawia, Nipigon, a girl, 7 lbs 8 oz. April 23 - Mrs. N.
