Gilmour Beattie of the Canadian Bible Society, an auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, addressed members of the congregation of St. Paul's United Church, Beardrnore in the church hall on Thursday, April 20, at 8 p.m. He spoke of the work done by the Bible Society in providing bibles for the native peoples of India and Africa at a price they could afford to pay -- often less than the cost of printing. They have already made over 800 translations of bibles and gospels in native tongues, and have hopes of providing for other groups still waiting. Mr. Beattie spoke particularly of the work of medical missionary Karl Winquist and his wife Elsie, from Sweden who were instrumental in the production of the Tigrinya Bible for the natives of Eritrea, Africa. That had no written language until) taught one by the Winquists, who then translated the bible with the help of native Christians. Mr. Beattie then showed the film, 'Leaves of the Tree,' showing the production of such a bible, from the cutting of the trees for pulp, in the forests of Scandinavia, the printing by newest methods of printing in England, to the distribution to native Christians in the villages of Africa where they became prized possessions. At a short meeting following the film, the members of the Bible society Committee of St. Paul's Church were returned to office for another year. N. Kilborn is president, Carl Wahl, vice-president, and Mrs. D.R. Clarke, secretary. Envelopes were distributed for the Bible Society offering. Buying or Selling! CALL GEORGE C.
