Thursday, February 2, 1961 NORSHORE SENTINEL 9 ROYALS SLUMP CONTINUES, MERCS LUMP TO SECOND Red Rock Royals ran smack into the revived Marathon Mercuries over the weekend and promptly dropped to third place in the North Shore Hockey league standings while losing their sixth and seventh games in their last eight outings. The speedy, slick passing Merks scored three late goals for a drab 5-1 victory Saturday night and then held off the Royals for a 5-3 win Sunday afternoon. Al Lanteigne figured in all five goals Saturday, with a hat trick and two assists on goals by rookie Ken Nutbrown and veteran Pete Amadeo. Whitey Smith scored a disputed goal for the Royals who trailed 1-0 in the first and 2-0 after the second. Lanteigne was at it again Sunday scoring two more goals and an assist. Ferguson, Bunny LeBlanc and Nutbrown again were the other scorers while Harv Tretiak, Whitey Smith and Gord Dunville countered for the fast-fading Royals. SCANNING: It was a case of missed opportunities and weak defence for the Royals Sunday as they had their share of the play but couldn’t score. Saturday’s game at 7 p.m. and did it help keep anyone away from the TV set? Afternoon games don’t seem to work either so what’s the answer? Paul Fournier was moved upfront with Harvey Dunville back on defence. No loss of weight either way! Paul was hustling up there however. The Royals are not working as a team at all. Too many players who want to do it all themselves with Neal Seagris always making one move too many. He’s playing better hockey but just not thinking the way he was before. Not as reckless either after a few hefty checks. RED ROCK MINORS PREVAIL Good hockey marred by poor attendance was characteristic of Nipigon’s Minor Hockey Rally, Saturday. For the Peewee division Nipigon lost 10-1 to Red Rock Pee wees. Nipigons lone goal was scored by Morden Nichol while Red Rocks goals were scored by Nick Kresonski (2), Hugh Hableson, Bob Jeffrey, Marc Boudreau, Kelly Scabar (2), David Kowalik and David Burton. Once again Nipigon was also defeated by Red Rock in the Bantam division 16-0. This result, however, does not reflect upon the Nipigon goalkeeper who saved many shots. The chief scorers for Red Rock were G. Vic Dahl drew the penalty for holding when in control of the puck, a fact that drew the ire of Flyer coach Jack Staples. "That (Tony) Delaronde is strictly a homer referee,’’ blasted Jack. "It was a lousy time to call a cheap penalty and how could a fella be holding when he has control of the puck? We get neutral refs in Nipigon and Red Rock but once we go down the line we hit these home-town refs. It’s the same thing in Marathon with Trembley. A man must be prejudiced in some way when he’s before his home town crowd. I figure a R. McCabe (4), D. Kivilahti, D. Adams (2), K. Leberee (2) and R. Boudreau. The Midget division brought a 6-4 win for Nipigon lover Terrace Bay Midgets. This was - an exciting game with Terrace Bay foiled by the agility of Bruce Stevens, Nipigon’s goaltender. Nipigon goal scorers were Carmin Stocco (3), David Nuttall (2) and Gordon Winfield. PLEASE NOTE: The hours for the Nipigon Post Office wicket are as follows : Sun., Nil; Mon. 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tues. - Fri. 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. visiting team should take their ref with them. It’s the only answer!†Jack’s Flyers found themselves down 3-2 after the first period, 5-3 at the end of the second and 6-3 in the third. They quickly replied with three fast goals but the Sups came back with goals at the 19.11 mark and the 19.33 mark by Marvin and Maurice Osmar to win. Marv increased his league scoring lead with three goals and three assists in a stick-out performance. Brother Maurice had two goals and Dave Wink Whalen had a goal and four assists. Tom Pollard and Dave Desrosier had the other goals. Herman Mannila and newcomer Noel Camire had a goal and two assists each for the Flyers while Alex Legacy, Paul Baxter, Vic Dahl and Gerry Carlisle with his first goal of the year, scored for the Flyers. GOAL DUST: Bruce Ward is making a terrific difference on the Flyer defence. They were without George Swan, Dean Jones and Moe Kelso but all three should be back Thursday against Red Rock. The Osmar line was as its best scoring six goals and 13 points. Desrosier played one of his better games while Vic Dahl seems to have shaken off his slump for Flyers.
