This photo is of the N.M. Paterson & Sons grain elevators and one of the Paterson ships, which were located in Thunder Bay (then Fort William), Ontario. I have this picture hanging in my home. My grandfather worked for N.M. Paterson & Sons all of his adult life - first in Wpg Manitoba then in Fort William/Thunder Bay, Ontario. As a young girl of age 9 or 10, visiting from Toronto, I remember my grandfather took me to the top floor of the main building and we stood near the edge of this huge open door/window overlooking the water. Holding tightly to my hand he let me take a step closer to the edge and told me to look down. It was amazing! Grain was fast-flowing into the hold of a ship. The noise, the smell, the vast size of the ship,...I was hooked! I knew then I wanted to travel the Great Lakes aboard the Paterson ships, linking my future to my grandfather's lifetime of work. ... Proud granddaughter of W.C. Waters
