- Description
- Black and white photograph of military Flying Officer George Brophy of Port Arthur, whom pilot Officer Andrew Charles Mynarski tried to free from his jammed turret in a blazing Lancaster over France. Mynarski struggled with the turret and heeded his comrade's pleas to jump and save himself. Only after he realized his efforts were useless and his clothing was on fire did the Victoria Cross winner finally bale out only to die later from burns. Brophy miraculously survived, being thrown clear when the aircraft crashed and exploded.
