7. In the approximate middle of the photograph a man can be seen standing behind an instrument set up on a tripod while to the right of the photograph a man can be seen holding a white vertical rod. The instrument on the tripod appears to be an engineers surveying level while the vertical rod is an engineers levelling rod. It would appear that an engineer with his rodman were in the process of measuring the dimensions of the rock cut at the time that the photograph was taken. It would be by means of these measured dimensions that the cubic yards of rock excavated would be calculated. Payment to the contractor for work done would be based upon the number of cubic yard of rock excavated. 8. Since the final spike for the Canadian Pacific Railway line between Montreal and Winnipeg was driven in May of 1885 and from the appearance of the work as shown in the photograph it would appear likely that the photograph was taken in the summer or fall of 1884.
