JAMES E. ISBESTER P.ENG. P.O. BOX 38 ARNPRIOR. ONTARIO K7S 3H2 December 30, 1990. The Editor, The Times-News, 75 S. Cumberland Street, Thunder Bay, Ontario, P7B 1A3. Dear Mr. Editor: 1. Accompanying this is a photocopy of an article headed "Town is named after engineer" as written by Susan Whitney. The article appeared in a recent December issue of your newspaper and deals with the early days of the Town of Schreiber. For ease of identification it is referred to as "A". 2. I would ask Susan Whitney and your newspaper the source of the statement to the effect that Isbester's Landing was "named after a colonel who lead his troops there during the first Riel Rebellion. 3. Several years ago a booklet entitled "Township of Schreiber Heritage" was produced as a project sponsored by the Ministry of Citizenship and Culture, Employment and Immigration and the Schreiber Parks and Recreation Department. In this booklet reference was made to a Colonel Isbester landing troops at the Schreiber Beach area at the time of the first Riel Rebellion, thus the name Isbester's Landing. A photocopy of the first several pages of this booklet in which a number of lines have been underlined and which has been identified as "B" accompanies this letter. Possibly your writer obtained her information from this booklet. If not, it would be very greatly appreciated if you or she could let me know the source from where it was obtained. It was several years after this booklet was published that it came to my attention, largely through the graces of a friend who lives at Terrace Bay and who was aware of the relationship of the name Isbester and the Town of Schreiber as it had been understood previous to the publishing of the booklet.
