Times-News, Thunder Bay, June 3/78 COLLENA DAMPIER HONORED WITH LIFE MEMBERSHIP ...by Rick Weidenhoeft, left, of OSSTF and Tom Dahl Nipigon teacher is honored BY GLENA CLEARWATER NIPIGON (Special) â€" The teaching ways from the 1940s have changed in many ways â€" as has the life style of the teachers. Last week in the Nipigon Legion, Collena Dampier was honored by friends, relatives and fellow and past teachers. Having started her teaching career in Nipigon in 1940, she has seen many students pass through her classes, some who now teach on the staff of the Nipigon-Red Rock District High School with her. Reminiscing on past times and events had the hall echoing with alughter laughter and emotions were stirred. The banquet, roast and dance had been planned on the quiet to surprise her, but no doubt the arrival home of son Jock from daughter Sarah from Toronto and son Alex from Thunder Bay aroused her suspicions. The celebration was deemed a "graduation" by her fellow teachers, and a secondary school graduation certificate was presented by Ken Wooster, complete with natural wood frame designed and made by John Tinnis of the school woodworking program. Knowing of Mrs. Dampier's dedication to her profession, Tom Dahl, provincial councillor in District 29 of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation made a special presentation of an honorary life membership is OSSTF from the provincial executive. Signs decorating the walls pointed out that over 2,000 students had passed through her classes, and on another wall were 37 paper students, each bearing the name of a graduating student from the appropriate year, ending with 1978 â€" Mrs. Collena Dampier. Acting as masters of ceremonies were Lillian Wolter, neighbor and teacher and Ivan Bakk, fellow teacher. Head table guests included Mr. and Mrs. Bob McKinnon, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Kamstra, Mrs. Wolter, Ivan Bakk, John Dampier, sons Jock and Alex, daughter Sarah, Ken Wooster, superintendent of supervisory services for Northwestern Ontario for the ministry of education, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Dahl, Mr. and Mrs. Rick Weidenhoeft and Doug McAllen, former long-time teacher at Nip-Rock. SKITS During the evening, several persons presented skits, stories and reminisces depicting the life of the guest of honor. In 1940, a Miss Collena Livingstone arrived by train in Nipigon to teach school in the basement of the present George O'Neill Public School, then known as Nipigon Continuation School. Nip-Rock over the past few years has become well-known for its participation in Reach for the Top. For the occasion, a panel was set up, with husband John Dampier, former teacher Bob Thompson and Glen Aylward, former student and fellow teacher on one side, against son Jock, fellow teacher Emelius Stephanitis and Monty Kerr, another fellow teacher. Judy Nielsen acted as judge and Ivan Bakk gave out the questions that included anything from the names of Mrs. Dampier's children to what kind of hair she has on her latest pair of winter boots to her hairdresser's name. Stories about the early days of teaching were also told by Freda Kamstra, who also came to Nipigon about the same time as Mrs. Dampier. She was then Freda Aedy. Messages were read from James Bud Martin; Mr. and Mrs. W. Perkins from eastern Ontario; Karen (Thompson) Pate, California; Sally and Elsa Sjolander, Calgary; Stephanie and John Farrell, Netherlands and a long taped message from former principal Peter Legace, now in Hanover, Ont.; Helvi and Ollie Virkamaki, Lindsay, Ont; Adrianne Hunter, Hawaii and Christie Rotstein, Portland, Ore. The program was arranged by a committee headed by Gerry Spreung, Cheryl Meikle, Ivan Bakk, Lillian Wolter and volunteers.
