TERRACE BAY MEN'S CHORUS 14 YEARS OLD

The Terrace Bay Male Chorus was formed in the Fall of 1953. Do any of you remember the full page ad in the Terrace Bay News? It happened to be pink that week and anyone who liked to sing was invited to be at the Recreation Centre to hear what would happen when a group of males blended their voices in four part harmony.

Some of the original group are still around and will remember just how it sounded.

The whole thing was Bob Shirriff's idea. Having been a member of the McDowell Chorus in Appleton, Wisconsin, and possessing a rich baritone voice and the talent to organize, Bob formed the nucleus of the Terrace Bay Men's Chorus. There are still a few with the group who heeded the call on that pink page namely, Clarence Buck, Fred Gould, Frank Seches-ky, Harry Coe, Bob Harris, Mike McCausland and Bert Lohr.

Some of the original members, like the present group, could not read music--but neither can Frank Sinatra. Still, it's fun to sing. Everyone, at one time or another, likes to burst out in song. It is surprising how well one can do after a little instruction in group singing.

The Chorus always welcomes new members who enjoy this pastime. There's a suitable spot for every voice range in a four part harmony group.

The Fort William Male Choir very kindly loaned the Terrace Bay Group enough music to get started and their first public appearance was at the Continuation School Commencement exercises in November, 1953. The first Annual Concert was presented here on May 21st, 1954.

The Chorus did very well under the guidance of Miss Beulah McAdam as Conductress and with Ray Husband as accompanist, so well that they were the guests of the Fort William Male Choir at the annual Big Sing of the Upper Midwest District of Associated Male Choruses of America. To take part in a Big Sing is a rewarding experience, especially if asked to do a solo number. At this particular Big Sing the Terrace Bay Chorus sang two solos and took part in all the massed choir numbers. That same year they joined the Associated Male Choruses of America and their first visit to the States came in April 1955 when they took part in a Big Sing at Rochester, Minn.
