Terrace Bay
Ceremonies Mark Opening Of New Centennial Park
By MRS. G. WHITELEY
Labor Day weather co-operated fully with the holiday atmosphere in the township of Terrace Bay at the official opening of Centennial Park and the dedication of the "Gem of the North Shore" fountain.
In bright sunshine, cooled only slightly by the wind off Lake Superior, local residents and visiting dignitaries gathered around the unique fountain for ceremonies marking its transfer from the parks committee to the people of Terrace Bay.
Led by the band of local sea cadets and wrenettes, many of the town's youngsters marched cheerfully from the ball field to the centennial park situated on Highway 17.
J.Cumming, chairman of the Centennial committee introduced the visitors to the assembled crowd. These included the Hon, and Mrs. G. Wardrope; Mr. and Mrs. R. K. Andras; Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Reed, mayor of Fort William; Mr. and Mrs. Saul Laskin, mayor of Port Arthur; Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Carruthers, Canadian president, Kimberly-Clark; Joe Wig, vice-president and general manager, Kimberly-Clark.
Ab Farrow, to whose handiwork the park owes its creation made the official presentation to Reeve Cavanaugh, following which Rev. G. Husser and Verv Rev. Dean Gallagher took part in the dedication of the plaque as it was placed at the base of the fountain.
Terrace Bay Chamber of Commerce then held a social hour and luncheon for the visitors and local dignitaries in the Terrace Bay Motor Hotel.
Speakers at the luncheon included Hon. George Wardrope, Mayors Laskin and Reed, Mr. Carruthers and Mr. Wig, Peter Romaniuk, Jack Phillips and Phil Broadhurst.
All speakers stressed what an asset the park and its unique fountain would be to Terrace Bay, marking it as one of the bright gems in the diadem of the North Shore.
Among the presentations made were memorial medallions from the Department of Mines, presented by Hon. George Wardrope to Reeve Cavanaugh and Ab Farrow.
These medallions included many minerals found in Ontario. In return Reeve Cavanaugh presented George Wardrope with a model of the fountain to be placed on display at the Department of Mines in Toronto with a suitable inscription stating that all stones mounted on it are to be found on the North Shore.
Also presented to each speaker and to Mr. Cavanaugh were desk pen sets, each with specimens of mineral ore, lead, amethyst, pyrolite, quartz, zinc and opalite and a Centennial pin and the Terrace Bay maple leaf crest.
PARK OPENING—A memorial plaque was presented (photo above) at the official opening of Terrace Bay's Centennial Park to Reeve Cavanaugh, left, by parks board chairman Ab Farrow, centre. Holding the plaque is Rolly Sinotte. A close up of the plaque is seen below.
