George Thomas, an officer of the Unevangelized Field Mission, and for 25 years a resident missionary in Brazil, was speaker at the Nipigon Baptist Mission recently. Mr. Thomas told of his experiences in Brazil and showed a film depicting the preaching of the gospel in Dutch New Guinea and the effects upon the natives. The film showed the customs and superstitions of the natives and the changes which missionaries were able to bring about. He spoke of Rev. and Mrs Marshall Southard who were serving in the Congo until the time of the uprising. Mrs. Southard is the former Thelma Wilde of Westfort Baptist Church, and she and her husband are presently teaching in the mission's public school in Haiti. The women's missionary group held a work night in place of their regular meeting, and completed bandages and diapers for the parcel to Kenya. Members were asked to bring dry food packages to the next meeting, at which Mrs. Gladys Saunders will be hostess. Nipigon 28 '3 '66 Zone Change Asked For Corner Store By GLENA CLEARWATER At the recent Nipigon council meeting members discussed the need for an office assistant and whether it should be female or male. It was felt a man is needed in the office to take over when Mr. Wheeler was absent. The job of welfare and waterworks officer is also open. A motion was passed finally that the clerk advertise for an assistant, male or female. The request from Port Arthur to join the Ontario Association of Mayors and Reeves was discussed and referred to the finance committee. No action was taken on the letter regarding Fort Frances Liberal Labor Association's resolution on rerouting a CNR passenger service. A letter from the Community Planning Board endorsed the plan for the second stage of Green Mantle subdivision. A request was received from E. C. Everett to rent the back hole machine for the digging up of a broken water line that serves ten homes in Everettville. Past policy has not been to rent it out only in an emergency and not on private property, but council felt that if it was an emergency and a health problem might arise, the works superintendent and the public works committee could have authority to approve the rental. An application was received from Tom Hebert for the opening of a corner store in his home. The application was accompanied by a petition signed with 100 names. A letter from the planning board recommended the lot be rezoned to allow such a store. Council felt it was important for such lots to be made available. The clerk is to check with Mr. Morpurgo of the community planning branch on whether or not it would mean changing the official plan.
