8 NORSHORE SENTINEL Thursday, January 5, 1961 NEIL SEACMS LEARNED FROM SENIORS; PROVES RED ROCK'S NEW LEADER by Chuck McOuat Neil Seagris has a simple answer for those who ask why he has suddenly blossomed into the Red Rock Royals team leader and main scoring threat with an average of better than three points' per game thus far this season. "It was that trip West with the Bearcats last year,†grins Neil in toothless fashion. "You can’t help but learn a lot watching fellows like (Steve) Hrymnak and (Ken) Harris. I’m just using my head instead of skating all around. That’s the difference !†But what a difference...as first Terrace Bay and then Nipigon’s regenerated Flyers learned over the holiday weekend! Neil had hat tricks in both games as the Royals beat Terrace 8-4 and then just nipped the Flyers 4-3 in a thriller Sunday at Red Rock. It brought his goal total and point total to 20, four better the runner-up Marvin Osmar as the Royals also moved four points out in front of the Superiors. Two other holiday games were not played. Terrace and Marathon mutually agreed to cancel their New Year’s game while Nipigon Flyers just didn’t show up for their Boxing Day game with Red Rock. Their case will go before league governors Saturday before meeting Marathon. Flyers, meanwhile, switched coaches after a disastrous 12-4 loss to Terrace Bay. Coach Marshall Borsk, who is automatically under a one year’s suspension after the Flyers’ forfeit, was replaced by former player Jack Staples. Seagris and some clever goal-work by Arnold Jorgenson made the difference Sunday as the Flyers came out fighting in their first official game under Staples. Jack had previously coached them against Marathon three weeks ago when they won their only game. Flyers led 3-2 after the first period but Seagris tied things in the early minutes of the second period and then scored what proved to be the winner early in the final lap. It was by far the best exhibition between the two teams thus far this season as the Flyers, just one week ago a poorly-conditioned, half-team, showed signs of their early season promise. They skated with the Royals all the way and, had it not been for a number of key saves by Jorgenson, might have even pulled the upset of the young season. Seagris with three and line-mate Brian Morgan with one provided the Royals scoring. Herman Mannila with two and Ray Maki scored for the Flyers. Herman also had an assist. GOAL DUST: George Swan has a broken bone in his back and will not be on skates for another week anyway. Rumor has it that Kelso may be transferred out of town. The Flyers would miss him. George Ruth back in nets full time. Gordie Dunville is more than holding his own in the fast-scoring competition of Morgan and Neil Seagris. This is one of the sharpest lines in the league. Red Rock of course had to make adjustments after the tragic death of Gary LeSarge. Gary and Larry were playing on a line together and were impressive in the Royals last few games. Jorgenson saved at least three sure goals with fine saves beating Herman Manilla twice. Flyers aiming for Marathon this weekend. Two wins would put them in a tie for second place, point-wise. And will big Ed Bolan be back in uniform for the Merks? Watch for a big noise over Saturday’s meeting on the Flyer protest on Boxing Day. Red Rock feels they should lose the two points, the gate and be fined $50. Terrace goalie Dobson was reportedly in hospital and that was a big reason for the Royals doubling up the Sups 8-4 although they probably would have won anyway. Sunday the Royals travel to Terrace Bay again and this game should answer many questions. Johnny’s Barber Shop in Red Rock supplies a free haircut to the player judged 'player of the game' for all Royals contests. So far in the Royals 11 games, Neil Seagris has won six clips, enough to last him until spring! Here goalie Arnold Jorgenson applies the scissors just to make sure Neil stays neat between cuts. Linemate Brian Morgan stands ready with comb. Seagris is the leading scorer in the NSHL with 20 points in six games. COURAGE NEEDED Serving on council should be the highest honor in the community but of late it appears the position, for the most part, has fallen to the hardy individual who has little or nothing to lose by expressing an opinion and having the courage of his convictions. â€" Gananoque (Ont.)
