Thursday, January 5, 1961 NORSHORE SENTINEL Nipigon Notes New Year’s celebrations j in Nipigon didn’t seem to be dampened by the fact that public dances had to close their doors earlier this year. Everyone enjoyed themselves and welcomed in the new year with gusto continuing after twelve with house parties. One group got the jump on new year by celebrating a day early and in a novel fashion. A costume masquerade party was held at the curling club rooms with Margaret and Mark Banning, Hilda and Harley Coulthard and May Anne and Don Stevens as hosts. Costumes included everything from blue-haired beatniks to "Sir Lancelot,” to the Caribbean holidayers and the bushy bearded Castro brothers. Approximately 38 guests enjoyed a night of fun with delicious refreshments rounding out the evening. Saturday evening saw three large dances take place with good crowds attending all. Approximately 90 attended the Legion party where the men’s committee of Art Durocher, Ross Williams, Bill Dwyer, Bob Merrifield and Stan Harper and the ladies committee of Mrs. A. Durocher, Mrs. H. Harper and Mrs. J. Mellish were responsible for a wonderful party. The Curling Club was the scene of a party attended by 23 couples. Mrs. Pat Huntus looked after the arrangements and Ernie Suter of the White Rose Station catered. The Elk’s Hall had a happy crowd of 80 to 90 enjoy an evening planned under the chairmanship of Gerry Brennan with the ladies committee chairman Mrs. S. Entson, Miss H. Kuorikoski, Mrs. H. Mikkola, Mrs. L. Makkne, Mrs. I. Martin and Mrs. D. McCullough looking after the refreshments. Many young people were home for the holidays. Some of those who travelled home to Nipigon were Wilbur Mikkâ€" ala from Toronto, Kimi Motomura, Art Santala and Amo Ruoho from the Lakehead, Gerald Smith from Michigan College, Sarah Jeffrey and Cynthia Saunders from Western University. Lois and Uno Manilla spent the holidays at home along with a house guest Alec Lagadin of Auger. One extra happy young lady on New Years Eve was Sheila Dwyer who became engaged to Neil Seagris. Doug Schulz, wife Betty Ann and wee daughters Susan and Sharon visited his parents during the festive season. Doug is stationed in Winnipeg with the RCAF. Mr. and Mrs. J,R. Barrow were pte Christmas guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Saunders .of the Northland Motel. Basil McCartney of Marathon was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. M. Banning and Sharon for the Christmas holidays. The Bannings are also expecting a visit from Mrs. George Kerr, Margaret’s aunt, from Niagara Falls. Christmas guests at the Wilbur Jackson home were son Gordon, who is with the Hydro in Windsor and relatives from Dorion, Mr. and Mrs. E. Sand and Mr. and Mrs. R. Jorgenson and son Craig. Bud Williams spent Christ* mas with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Reg Williams. The Waghom’s are having fun commuting these days. Gerry spent Christmas in Nipigon and Margaret travelled to Marathon for die New Year’s celebrations. Mr. and Mrs. M.S. McCullough had their daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. S. Ray with them for Christmas and New Year’s. Constable Herb Osmond, RCMP, wife Audrey and the children left for a trip west last week. Audrey and the children will visit relatives in Dauphin while Herb attends a police course in Saskatchewan. AL Armstrong of the OPP is now home from the east where he attended a police course.
