Description
This undated photograph, c. 1900, shows a young man playing tennis on the lawn of Brucefield, Mount Pleasant's most palatial home. It was printed on page 140 of The Work of Our Hands by Sharon Jaeger and was provided by Linda Guest.

Brucefield was built in the 1840s for Abraham Cooke, who gained a reputation for events as lavish as his home was. He later sold it to Hartley in 1876. This photograph was taken in the early 1900s when the house was owned by the McAlister family, great players of tennis; the unidentified man depicted was probably one of their guests.
