- Description
- This 1903 photograph depicts Samuel Gordon Hunter and several family members. The people in this photo are, from left to right: Samuel Hunter; Lena Edwin, Charles's sister; Charles Dean Hunter; Emily Hunter, Samuel's first wife.
The Hunter family is an early, prominent Scotland family. Samuel Gordon Hunter first came to Scotland with his first wife Emily in 1869. He was a horticulturist and established his farm on Simcoe St. The farm primarily grew the flowers that he sold for a living; he was particularly fond of dahlias. He also kept bees, and raised chickens, cows and geese. During the winter, he would often walk from Scotland to other communities such as Paris and Simcoe to take orders; in the spring, he would bicycle out to deliver the flowers.
