FIRE AND WATER and-ladder race, and first in the rope-race. They also, according to the Star-Transcript, won first place in the hearts of the ladies. Perhaps this last triumph was due to their uniforms, which consisted of white trousers, blue coats, and white yachting-caps - "all present- ing (the paper said) a very smart and natty appearance". When the brigades returned to Paris, they received a public re- ception. Two thousand cheering citizens, accompanied by the Citizens' Band and a group of orators, met the train. Next year the brigades went by special train to a tournament at Milton. Here they won the hose-reel race for the third successive year, and came third in the hook-and-ladder race. When the. brigades arrived home - this time at X a.m. - they were again met by the band and torch bearers. But despite their triumph, the members felt discouraged. Their emotions are mirrored by the Star-Transcript, which stated: It is to be regretted that the excursion was not better patronized, only 38 citizens accompanying the boys to Milton. They feel that their efforts are not supported in a manner that they should be, and it is likely that the boys who have upheld the reputation of the town at the Provincial Firemen's Meet, during the past four years, will disband. The Fire Chief at this time was George Crawford. The able captain of the team was Donald Sinclair. The members, not all of whom went to both meets, were as follows: Isaac Stewart, Charles (Doc) Tate, Ernest Burt, Cliff Barker, Hector Henderson, James Aitkin, Bert Hatch, Duff Adams, John Skelley, Peter Layden, John Championship Fire Brigade 1908 Robert West in foreground 129
