Description

Three black and white photographs depicting the Remembrance Day ceremony in Paris, Ontario, on 11 November 1981.

1999.0308.01: A crowd of children and adults standing at the corner of Grand River Street North and Mechanic Street in Paris, Ontario, facing towards the Paris Cenotaph. There are two rows of people: one standing on the sidewalk, and another standing in the middle of the street, presumably so the military parade could pass through. Identifiable businesses on Grand River Street North includes the coffee cup, an empty store, McCormicks, B[L]OCK The Income Tax People, and a clothing store. Paris photographer D. A. Smith took this photograph.

1999.0309.01: Crowds gathered on the sidewalks surrounding the Paris Cenotaph, and military personnel lined along the sidewalk leading towards the monument. A portion of the cenotaph can be seen in the right background of the image, as well as cars, a light-coloured building, and a billboard. This photograph was also taken by D. A. Smith.

1999.0310.01: A view of the military personnel and civilian crowds, taken in front of the cenotaph looking towards Mechanic Street. There is a woman in the foreground wearing a dark knee-length coat, a hat, and her hair in a bun, facing away from the camera. She is presumably giving a speech. There are six flag bearers on the left holding a Union Jack, Royal Canadian Legion flags, and a Canadian flag. On the right are veterans and military servicepersons in uniform, with a wreath standing on the ground in front. In the background is the light-coloured Tough & Son Hardware and Plumbing building with a large sign on the side. The photograph was taken by the Paris Star newspaper.
