What a nice find! far better than the image that we have of this man (which is taken from a book that was published in 1932 called Annals of the Bairds). Hugh Nicol Baird was born 10 Sept 1770 at Bothkennar, Scotland and died 26 Sept 1827 at Kelvinhead, Scotland. He was the son of Nicol Baird (surveyor on the Forth and Clyde Canal) and Christian Pringle. Hugh Nicol Baird married Margaret Burnthwaite 27 Sept 1795 in Ulverston, Scotland and had 5 children. His son, Nicol Hugh Baird (born 26 Aug 1796) came to Canada and received position with Colonel John By on the Rideau Canal in what came to become Ottawa. Hugh Nicol Baird has a page in Wikipedia and in the Gazetteer for Scotland.
