- This brass "patriotic box" was sent to soldiers during the Boer War in South Africa, fought from 1899 - 1902. Canada took part in the war, with 8600 volunteers. It included small items to help raise morale, including chocolates, tobacco, and New Testaments. The top of the box has an image of Queen Victoria and the text "South Africa 1900".
This artifact was provided for photography by Richard Shaver from his personal collection. It can be seen on display at the Canadian Military Heritage Museum in Brantford. - Notes
