The Midlothian Road Swing Bridge
The Swing Bridge

We're traveling down an isolated area along the Magnetawan River in the Steamer Armour. We're going along just fine but off the in the distance there is a white bridge. The Armour is way too tall to fit under the bridge. There's no need to worry though, this is the Midlothian Road Swing Bridge.

Here's and image of the Armour about to go through the swing bridge. However the bridge has not yet moved because there are a few people still coming off the bridge.

The people have cleared the bridge and the swing bridge has opened to let the Armour through. A swing bridge is a movable bridge on a central pier in the middle of the river. From this pier the bridge can pivot 360°.

This is an image of the swing bridge while its closed and there are no boats around. The house behind the bridge is where the swing bridge operator lived.

Here's the swing bridge just after a boat has gone by, you can see the boat's wake on the left side of the pier. There is no one on the bridge or the ramp to the bridge on the left.

From the swing bridge we can see a boat coming up the river to start the process all over the again. The approach, the bridge clearing, the opening of the bridge, the boat goes through and the bridge closes. The process will continue all year, day and night for many years to come.
