This photograph was likely taken at Camp Edgar in Sundridge (Paget Farm) If you zoom in on his uniform he is wearing the rank of Company Quarter Master Sergeant (right sleeve) which he was while in the 162 Overseas Battalion. In order to go overseas, he accepted a reversion in rank to private likely at Camp Niagara, and once in England the 162 was broken up and sent to other battalions as reinforcements. He was assigned to the 75th Infantry Battalion and was soon promoted to Lance Corporal, he was killed at Vimy Ridge 9 April 1917. After his death and internment he was posthumously reinstated to his rank of CQMS and so it is shown on his tombstone.
