Beavers Take It! DRIDGE CAPTURES DISTRICT PUCK TITLE Wilfred Kennedy (Bucko) McDonald is a happy man to-^ day and rightfully so. The smooth-passing Sundridge Beavers made good for the big fellow last night by charging through for five last- period goals that gave them a 9-5 victory over North Bay Black Hawks and the championship of the North Bay and District Hockey Association. It was a fitting climax for Bucko McDonald's excellent drilled and well-handled team, which had previously captured the OHA intermediate "B" title. Sundridge surged triumphantlyO--"--- into a commanding 3-0 lead before ' 10 minutes of the opening spasm had elapsed, and saw he Black Hawks score once before the first period closed to wear down their lead slightly. It was then the Tribe's turn for goal-getting and the Bayites after a sustained drive, went into a 4-3 lead on Harold Bonany's tally near the nine minute mark. But in- stead of disorganizing the Beavers, as an early Sundridge goal did the Black Hawks, the sudden reverse made the visitors fight back and they tied the count late in the sec- ond heat when Bo Wheeler found the net. The Sundridgers came back in splendid form, playing great hockey, and pouring rubber at the veteran Harry Lalande by the bucketful. Such antics had to pay off in goals and the tiebreaker came with five minutes gone in the third heat when helmeted Harold Hill found the mark with a long drive from the boards. Beginning of the End It was the beginning of the end for the tired Tribe. The Sundridge final outburst climaxed a sensa- tional final drive as the winners steamed away from the fading Pal- angio-crew in the final minutes. Sundridge fashioned their sixth tally around the midway mark and the tally pushed in by Mye Sedore in a mad scramble proved the deciding mar ker, even though the winners proved their superiority as the final minutes ticked by, scoring three more. Bill Dwyer's second goal of the game was the Black Hawks' lone counter in the third stanza as the champion Sundridgers backed up a roaring offensive with air-tight checking. Although the Black Hawks tried repeatedly to break down the Sundridge defensive methods by uncorking numerous rushes by fellows like Frankie Ringler, Pete Palangio, Doug McDonald etc., they just Mye Sedore The Clincher! Again this former professional hockey and lacrosse star of the past was the link in the Sundridge suc- cess story. He was the difference in the teams. Sundridge had an abundance in scoring power and likewise the Black Hawks. How- ever, the Tribe couldn't match their district rivals in the all-important system of defence. Both McDon- ald and smooth Sam Rennie made up the difference in teams. Although the team's feelings for each other were not of the best during the season, there was handshaking and congratulations after the hectic struggle had ended North Bay's first season 1 artificial ice. Harold K. i d tiV opened the scoring, with a vicious drive that caught the corner. Harold Hill made it 2-0 scoring on a hard slap shot and Mye Sedore clicked on a BlaoJt *• ***** as the Bayites wer^ Finally Billy DvtJ top corner behind Cle Sundridge citadel on front of the visitor's tv . Oussion H' When Vince Cussion play down the boards he failed to see the approaching hulk of Bucko McDonald who handed him a ter- rific jolt and the dark-haired Black Hawk forward was hurt. He left the ice Tor the dressing room, where it was learned that he had incurred a broken right wrist. He dressed in street clothes, however, and came back to watch the game. Fortun- ately for him, it was his right wrist, not the left with which he pitches for Silver Foams. With Cussion out of the lineup, the Rtnck TT. wks were missing a 1 mTmTTer tor . ..^ : . - - i line trio and coach Pete Palangio and Cam King had to take turns in moving up to the front flank to fill the gap. Three straight goals by the Bayites moved them from behind the eight ball to the front in the second session. Regis (Pep) Kelly fired one and Harold Bonany collected two in a row to put the Tribe out in front for the first time during the game. The Hawks appeared to have had one too, when Morland's shot seemed to go behind Cletus Hill after a scramble. : However, the puck had not entered the net. Bucko McDonald started off the tieing goal by driving a sizzler off the boards in the Black Hawk end. The shot caromed to the side where Borden (Bo) Wheeler was waiting, and the Sundridger merely rammed it home. It was just a case of too much positional hockey in the final period as the Sundridge team made al- most every chance they had counted while on the other hand the Black j Hawks looked hopelessly bogged j down with the visitor's hard-checking tactics.
