Activities for the year began Monday with a pot- luck supper for members of the Sundridge Horticultural Society. About 40 members and friends gathered at Zion United Church, when the President outlined the activities of the year. May 12th the Mothers' Day Tea will feature white elephant and children's table, as well as the bake table. Small plants will be available as well. Violet Milne told of the coming August Flower and Vegetable Show. Norma Thornborrow said the society would again care for the village gardens and make the community more beautiful. She also thanked those who helped make the Christmas Fantasies such a success. She and Pat Lee had planned the affair, as it was a special for the junior Members. The event of the evening was a slide presentation on Maple Sugar making by Mr and Mrs. Hubbard of Pevensey. It was enjoyed by all. Spiles and the kind of piping used were also on hand, and members enjoyed a sample of the sugar. The society meets again on Monday, March 19th at the community centre. It was agreed that the agricultural society be invited to this meeting to hear Matt Valt, Supervisor of the Agricultural Food Department of the Experimental Station at Kettlby, Ontario. Twelve members of the Sundridge Horticultural Society joined the North Bay Club on a bus trip to the Flower and Garden Show at the Automotive Building, also the Pool and Patio Show at the Queen Elizabeth Building, both in Toronto. Those who enjoyed the beautiful weather and trip down were Violet Milne, Else VanMeer, Florence Michel, Pat and Jim Lee, Yvonne Montgomery, Inger Pederson, Joyce Lang, Beryl McClennan, Winnie Evans, Lucy Rennie and Helen Copeman. The March meeting of the Sundridge Horticultural Society was held recently at the community centre. Helen Copeman, president, welcomed 25 members and guests. Joan Bisbee, acting secretary for Bob Hiltz, read the minutes of the February meeting, which included an invitation to members of the Strong Agricultural Society to attend meetings. Winnie Stabenow gave the financial report. The membership report was presented by Winnie Evans; social by Dorothy Grosvenor; literature by Gillian Thomas; junior by Pat Lee; followed by programs and spring planting by Violet Milne. Members were informed the Spring May Tea will take place May 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the arena. The tea will feature a bake sale, a white elephant table and a plant sale. Twelve members joined the North Bay Club on a trip to the Flower and Garden Show in Toronto earlier in the month. Guest speaker for the evening was Matt Valt from the Holland Landing Gardens. Mr. Valt, who is employed by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, presented a film on the "Muck" station -- an experimental research branch of the government. Mr. Valt ex- plained the Gardens are six feet below surrounding lake levels and by a drainage system, supplies most of Canada's Grade I vegetables which are cold vacummed before ship- ping. Mrs. Milne reminded the members of two upcoming speakers in April and May -- Bill Pagowski from the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton will speak on "Roses" and Marthe Velduis from Dundas, Ont. Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings, held on the third Monday of each month.
