The big log is a Hemlock and the men are peeling the bark off. Hemlock was the source for Tan Bark used in the leather tanning process. The fellow on thr right stands just behind his spud, a tool used to peel (pry) the bark off the log. The fellow with the axe would score (chop) a line around the full circumference of the log at about 4ft intervals on the log and then the peeler would remove the bark ... Tan bark was an important cash commodity to the settlers and farmers.
