- Notes
- In this picture looking west from the Newell home, we can see a small home located on Lot 1 on the south side of Ahmic Street, opposite the Methodist Church. To the right of the church is the home of Caroline (Croswell) Paul and on the far right Ahmic Harbour School.
Waity Croswell recalls that there was once a little home and a barn beside the brick pond and opposite the church. When Waity was growing up, the property was owned by John Newell and Waity’s grandmother Newell’s belongings were stored there. Later the home was sold and moved to Parry Sound. Stored in the barn was a car belonging to someone from Toronto. At one point, there was also a cutter and buggy belonging to this person.
According to Cliff Croswell, the gentleman who owned the vehicles in the barn was Sir Henry Mill Pellat, the man who built Casa Loma in Toronto. He apparently kept the equipment and a horse in Ahmic Harbour for the trips he made to check on his lumber interests.
Waity further recalls that when she was growing up this area was open fields and you could see all the way to the home that was later known as the ‘Green House’ (Edmund Paul’s house) from the Newell home.
As noted this picture below from the 1930’s shows the small home located opposite the church and the barn behind as recalled by Waity. It further shows the openness of the land.
The two young people in the picture are identified as Dwight and Fay Newell.
