Notes
Part Lot 4 and Lot 5 on the north side of Ahmic Street were originally transferred from John and Mary Ann (Taylor) Croswell to Elizabeth (Ross) Miller in 1889 for $1. Elizabeth was the sister of Amelia Ross (wife of Samson Paul). In 1889, after the death of her first husband, Elizabeth married Thomas Forsythe. At the time of the 1891 census, the newly married couple and family appear to be living in rural Croft rather than in Ahmic Harbour. In the early 1890’s the family may have occupied the home since at least one of their children was reported as born in Ahmic Harbour. Nonetheless, according to the 1891 census, the James and Sarah (Taylor) Jayes family were possibly living in the home. In 1896 the property formally transferred from Elizabeth (Miller) and Thomas Forsythe to James Jayes. In 1898, James Jayes sold the property to Lillie (Croswell) Kennedy. (Sarah Taylor Jayes was Lillian Croswell Kennedy’s aunt.) It appears to be at this time that the property truly came into its own as a boarding house. This picture taken around the turn of the century shows the boarding house under Lillie’s management. In the brochure, “Muskoka Lakes, Highlands of Ontario” produced by the Grand Trunk Railway and Muskoka L. N. and H. Co., 1907, the Lillie (Croswell) Kennedy is identified as operating a boarding house.
