Notes
Lot 9 on the NE corner of Ahmic and George Streets was originally sold by John and Mary Ann (Taylor) Croswell to Susan McQuhae in 1887. By 1888, John McQuhae, Susan’s husband is identified in the Ontario Gazetteer and Business Directory (reproduced at right) as operating a general store in Ahmic Harbour. That store, pictured above was the first store in Ahmic Harbour. John and Susan ran into financial problems and in 1890 the property was reacquired by John Croswell who, in the 1891 census, was identified as a General Merchant. In 1891, Croswell contracted with Robertson and Cliffe of Dunchurch to run the store. E.H. Cliffe ran the post office from the building in 1891 and 1892. In 1894, John Croswell sold the store to Annie Arthurs. She and her husband John ran the store themselves and from 1895 to 1897, John Arthurs ran the post office from the store. In 1898 Jules Brown and Edmund Clavis (variously spelled Clavir) purchased the store. It was during the period 1892 to 1898 that the store was renovated and clad in Croswell brick. Jules Brown and family lived in the building and operated the store from 1898 until 1920 when it transferred to John Henry Newell who moved his retail business from Lot 5 on the south side of Ahmic Street to the new location.

In the picture at left from around 1908, we see the impressive brick general store built in the 1890’s on Lot 9. At the time of this picture, the store was owned and operated by Jules Brown and family. The family lived in the apartment in the upper part of the building.
