- Notes
- In this picture we get a closer look at the first general store in Ahmic Harbour. This store was built around 1887 by Susan and John McQuhae. They operated the store for several years before running into financial difficulties. The store then passed back into the hands of John Croswell who may have briefly run the store. In 1891, Croswell contracted with William Robertson and Ebenezer Cliffe from Dunchurch to operate the store and in 1891 and 1892 Cliffe ran the Post Office from the building (while Robertson presumably continued to operate his store in Dunchurch). In 1894, the store was sold to Annie Barbara Arthur. She and John ran the store from 1895 to 1897 during which time, John was also Post Master. In 1898, Jules Brown and Edmund Clavir became the owners. It was during these years that the store was either rebuilt or redesigned and clad in Croswell brick. Writing of Ahmic Harbour in his brief visit in 1891 or 1892, Reverend Walker wrote: “As we landed, we observed a few men loitering lazily around. They looked as though they had quarreled with work a few years ago, and had never again made up friends.” Was it the group of men in the picture above who prompted Reverend Walker’s remark?
