- Notes
- In this enlargement, the 26 room Croswell Boarding House is pictured at the top left. The front of the building was originally log that was later clad in wood siding. It was the oldest home in Ahmic Harbour, showing on the survey map in the Atlas and Guidebook for Muskoka and Parry Sound, 1879. A large frame addition to the original log building was built before 1889. In 1895, ‘Black’ Charles Croswell and his wife Phoebe (Dixon) bought the property back from Charles’s father, John Croswell which they continued to operate as a boarding house. The large barn at the right of the picture was part of the boarding house. It apparently could house up to 16 teams of horses. The barn contained a windmill that was used to power a saw to cut planking for the Croswell boat company. The boarding house and livery played an important part in the early history of the village as a place for teamsters, other lumberman and visitors to stay.
The small home in the middle of the photograph was included as part of the purchase by Charles and Phoebe Croswell from John Croswell in 1895. In 1898, the small home transferred to Jules Brown and James Clavell (sp). They transferred the property to Annie Barbara Arthur when they bought the general store from her. In 1899, the Annie Arthur transferred the property to William Millin who ran the post office from the home.
