- Notes
- The gentleman in the picture is Robert Hicks, He is in front of the home of Sam and Amelia (Ross) Paul.
Lots 10 and 11 on the south side of Elizabeth Street were originally sold to Samson and Amelia (Ross) Paul in 1890. In 1890, Samson and Amelia sold a small part of the lots to John A. Johnson who was in the process of building the new Cliffeburne Hotel and needed the extra land for outbuildings.
Sam Paul worked at a variety of trades through the years. As carpenter, he built the second school house for the village – and, for a short period of time was teacher. In 1886/87 and 1888/89 he was identified as a grain dealer; from 1887-1891 as postmaster; in 1906 as a blacksmith; and in 1910/11 as a wagon maker and livery. He was identified as a farmer in the 1891 census.
Samson and Amelia built the home which stood on the lot.
