- Notes
- This picture is of the John Wylie home (right) and post office (frame addition on left). The brick home is still standing to the north and east of ‘Guitar Picker’s Corners’.
The people in the picture are: Violet Cousins, front left; Eunice Wylie, behind Violet; Minnie Wager, to the right of Violet; boys Wilbert and Melville Wylie; and men Howard Wager and John Wylie. The brick part of the building was recently renovated by Carl and Joyce (Whitmell) Crossman. It was commonly understood that John Wylie built the home and that he was one of the earliest, perhaps the second post master in Ahmic Harbour. However, research has shown that he was the 9th postmaster for Ahmic Harbour, serving from 1915-04-08 to 1960-07-15. He was preceded by John Croswell, Samson Paul, Ebenezer H. Cliffe, Charles Croswell, John Arthurs, William Millin, E.C. Bennett and Charles E. Newell.
Further research has also confirmed that Lots 8 and 9 were originally sold to George McCormick in 1896. Based upon the transaction price of $1,000, it would appear likely that the home had already been built by John Croswell, or that the purchase price included construction of a home. - Place of Publication
