Stoker James Gibson died in a later mission of the HMS Ajax in the Mediterranean during the bombing of Crete. He was forty one years old at the time.
The Ajax sailed to assist in evacuation of allied troops from Crete. She was damaged in an air attack on passage with HMS Dido, HMS Orion, HM Destroyers Decoy, Jackal, Imperial, Hotspur, Kimberly and Hereward. Ajax withdrew but the damage was later found to be less serious. She then took passage to Heraklion to evacuate troops.
A tree was planted in James’ honour by Town council under the Millennium Tree Planting Project on September 27, 2001. - Geographic Coverage
