He worked as an apprentice butcher before joining the Royal Navy on November 21, 1933. He was only eighteen years old. By December 1939, at the time of the Battle of the River Plate, James had already served many ships and had moved up the ranks to the position of Leading Stoker. After the Battle James received a letter from Captain Noake of Engineering praising his actions. In the letter he is recommended for `accelerated advancement'. He continued with the Royal Navy until January 18, 1946 when he left After the war James went to work as a unit operator at the Carolina Power Station. In 1942 he married Margaret Pitcairn McKay and together they had three sons; James, Douglas and Colin. James died on February 2, 1979 in his 64th year.
