Joseph was born in 1920 to parents Herbert Edmund and Florence Minnie Salt. He died in a later battle in the Mediterranean during a bombing at the evacuation of Crete while serving on HMS Ajax. He was only 21 years old.
The Ajax sailed to assist in evacuation of allied troops from Crete. She was damaged in an air attack on passage with HMS Dido, HMS Orion, HM Destroyers Decoy, Jackal, Imperial, Hotspur, Kimberly and Hereward. Ajax withdrew but damage was found to be less serious and took passage to Heraklion to evacuate the troops. - Geographic Coverage
