1990s Belt Tightening

An economic recession at the beginning of the decade led to moderation in spending and a return to comfort foods and cocooning at home. Consumers embraced recycling and environmental concerns. Internet usage rapidly increased over the decade. The Blue Jays won the World Series in both 1992 and 1993. In 1993 Canada elected the first female Prime Minister, Kim Campbell. In 1999, Nunavut became Canada’s third territory.

Historical Highlights:

-Public Internet stations became a fixture in public libraries
-In 1991 the Village Branch celebrated its 100th anniversary
-In 1994 the McLean Branch Library opens as part of the new community centre. Both the library and centre are instant success stories!
-In 1994 inventory of the three branches included 130,000 books, movies, cassettes, compact discs and periodicals
-On March 1, 1995 the Friends of the Ajax Public Library officially formed. From day one the Friends support library initiatives but their biggest endeavor was the successful Million Dollar Campaign for a new Main Branch Library!
-Library hours are expanded to include service on Sundays during the school year.
